450 TOTAL Students!!!!!!

In the fall of 2007, teachers confirmed their interest in this aspect of the program. In winter 2008 AE instructors distributed the Responsible Angler workbooks and the 2008 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations to these schools. I also included an Introductory Page, Angling Regulations Activity and a small booklet called Fishing is Fun. Each student, guided by their classroom teachers, spent 14-16 hours during the remaining school year (Apr-June) to complete their assignments.

I also organized a “Fish Crew” that gave a 2-hour presentation, in each classroom, covering Angling Regulations, Knot Tying, Dilemmas/Ethics, and Safety.

Twelve schools were selected to participate in the Kokanee Karnival Angling Clinic located at Shevlin Park. During this clinic, students participated in a Hooks and Ladders activity, focusing on the life cycle of Kokanee salmon. Also they rotated through four stations highlighting Fishing Methods, Casting, Knot Tying, and Fish Biology.

The afternoon portion consisted of fishing on Shevlin Pond.

Two classes from Lava Ridge enrolled in the Elective Level organized their own fishing day.

All portions were completed by June 13th All administrative duties were completed July 30th.

Volunteers Jeri Welbourn, Mark Reisinger, Bob Griffin, Vivian Rockwell, Dave Semich, Betsy Brauer, Rod Juranek, Gene McMullen, Sandy Dunahay, Andy Smith, and Bob Mullong gave a total of 224.25 hours and drove a total of 1802.4 miles to complete their tasks. This does not include the hours and miles donated at the Spring Clinic!!!!!!! Now that is a real “FINS UP”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The program is growing and now, with the aid of more Certified Instructors, the classes will be increased in the 2008-2009 school year.

FINS UP!
